After graduating from the Department of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in organ performance, Yuichiro Shiina completed his Master’s course at the Graduate School of the same university.
He won the Second Prize at the First Dallas International Organ Competition, the Third Prize at the 12th International Bach Competition in Leipzig, and the First Prize at the NDR Musikpreis 2002–International Organ Competition.
He studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he received organ instruction from the late Prof. Michael Radulescu and harpsichord instruction from the late Prof. Gordon Murray, graduating with the highest honors unanimously conferred. He subsequently continued his studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, studying organ and harpsichord under Dr. Jean-Claude Zehnder, continuo under Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, and ensemble under Anthony Rooley.
In addition to performing throughout Japan, he has appeared in major European festivals, including the Swiss Organ Festival, and given concerts in Germany, Austria, and other parts of Europe.
His numerous CDs released by Kojima Recordings (ALM RECORDS), including “J.S.Bach's Organ TAFEL ANATOMIA”, “Die Friedensgebete”, and “Mendelssohn: Selected Organ Works”, have received critical acclaim and were selected as “Specially Recommended Discs” by Record Geijutsu magazine. His book An Introduction to the Pipe Organ was published by Shunjusha Publishing Company.
He is currently Professor at the Faculty of Letters, Tohoku Gakuin University, where he also serves as Chaplain and Director of the Institute for Sacred Music. He is a member of the Hymnal Committee of the United Church of Christ in Japan, and organist of Kichijoji Church of the same denomination.
