Japan’s leading organist, Yuichiro Shiina, records twenty-two organ works by the great master of the North German organ school, Dieterich Buxtehude, using two surviving Arp Schnitger organs in Hamburg and Norden. From the free, improvisatory toccatas set against rigorously constructed fugues, to chorale preludes rich in ornamentation, this recording goes beyond the familiar image of Buxtehude as merely a forerunner of Bach, reviving for the present day the brilliance and power of the music of a “star musician” who flourished in Lübeck.
