Process and Music Founded on the Principle of "Resistance"

Max Devereaux (b. 1994) is a Minneapolis-based composer and guitarist whose cross-disciplinary practice extends into film, painting, and ikebana. Built on an ongoing output rooted in intuition, improvisation, and process-driven methodology, his work occupies a distinctive position within the contemporary American avant-garde. Situated at the intersection of contemporary composition, electroacoustic music, and sound studies, his discography spans more than 100 releases on labels worldwide, including in Japan, and includes repeated collaborations with Japanese improvisation and avant-garde artists Hiromichi Sakamoto, Shoji Hano, and Ryuichi Yoshida.

RESISTANCE, composed in 2026, is realized here as a solo electric guitar performance by Devereaux himself. Rather than conventional narrative, the work is a speculative and lucid sonic study emphasizing modes of sound production, sustained attention, and the materiality of time. Its graphic score, written for unspecified instrumentation or ensemble, preserves the singular intensity and identity of the piece while remaining open to solidarity and variation across boundaries.
[The graphic score for this work is included in the booklet.]
