The genius organist and composer Charles Tournemire entrusted The Seven Last Words of Christ—a theme explored by numerous composers—to a single organ.
Through his mastery of improvisation inherited from Franck and his poetic compositional techniques, Tournemire wove a mystical world of sound. Hiroko Takahashi (resident organist of the Shinjuku Cultural Center and organist at St. Luke’s Chapel, St. Luke’s International University) brings this world to life, unveiling its depths alongside the exquisite gradations of sound produced by the 70-stop organ crafted by the Alsatian firm Kern.
Charles Tournemire:
- [1] Triple Choral (Sancta Trinitas), op.41
- Sept Chorals-Poèmes d’Orgue pour les sept paroles du Xrist, op.67
- [2] Pater, dimitte illis; nesciunt enim quid faciunt
- [3] Hodie mecum eris in Paradiso
- [4] Mulier, ecce filius tuus. Ecce mater tua
- [5] Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani
- [6] Sitio
- [7] Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum
- [8] Consummatum est
Hiroko Takahashi, organ
Recorded at Shinjuku Bunka Center Main Hall, 15-17 August 2020
