After twenty-five years, the “typhoon” of contemporary contrabass music returns.
Through works performed by the composer himself—Shokichi’s Dream, in which a single contrabassist plays, recites, and sings, and Microtones Study II, a microtonal étude transplanted from the thirteen-string koto to the contrabass—together with pieces written for Mizoiri by three figures who sustained Japan’s contemporary music scene until their final years—Yori-aki Matsudaira, Joji Yuasa, and Toshi Ichiyanagi—this album ventures ever deeper into the expressive possibilities of the contrabass.
